Purple mangosteen fruit belongs to the family of Clusiaceae, of the genus Garcinia. The scientific name is Garcinia mangostana. Thailand, Burma, India, Singapore and Vietnam are some of the countries where it was cultivated for many years and it is available in some regions of Africa. In the South-East Asian regions it is called "the Queen" of tropical fruits. Fresh purple mangosteen fruits can be available in the markets from June until October. This fruit is uniquely pear-shaped and its outer shell is purple in color when ripe. Internally white edible pulp is segmented like oranges and the seeds are found within the pulp. The pulp has soft fragrance with a sweet taste but the seeds are bitter in taste.
