What is PP Yarn and Where is it Used?

- 1 read
PP Yarn or Polypropylene Fiber is one of the first synthetic fibers which has seen usage in a variety of applications and industries. It is the most widely used material in products such as carpets, as it provides durability at a very economical price. It is a lightweight material which is resistant to most chemical reagents, heat, and does not take damage from water. Being a thermoplastic, it does not easily damage until heated to very high temperatures, and it is a stereoregular polymer. It has a crystalline structure at the molecular level and is non-poplar in its bonds.
Properties of PP Yarn:
PP yarn has several interesting and useful properties that make it an excellent choice in the textile industry. These properties are:
Lightweight
PP Yarn belongs to the class of stereoregular polymers which are inherently lightweight and can be used in applications where the weight of the fabric would cause an issue. Summer carpets, or even hanging wall carpets are a great example of such applications.
Strong
PP is also a very strong fabric thanks to strong carbon bonds within its structure. This allows it to withstand large forces and provide a high tensile strength. This also allows it to be stretched into films and be used in the packaging industry.
Hydrophobic
Hydrophobic fabrics are quite high in demand these days from various textile consumers. This is primarily because they are much easier to clean and can be used in rough applications or outdoor areas as well without worrying about stains or damage. PP is one such material which can easily repel water when it falls on the material and keep it free from water damage.
Flexible
The material is also extremely flexible and can be used to produce comfortable garments and easily rollable carpets that don’t get damaged from folding incorrectly. The textiles made with PP are also more resistant against wrinkling while in use.
Low Thermal Conductivity
This property makes PP an excellent insulator for situations where thermal conductivity is supposed to be eliminated such as the carpet in an extremely cold or warm area.
